List of Dominion Cards that Cost 5 Coin

list of dominion cards that cost 5 coinDominion is a very well-designed game. Each facet of the game contributes to the overall whole, from the artwork on the cards to the themes within each set all the way down to the cost of each card. Nothing is arbitrary or random, and every card undergoes extensive testing and trial play prior to being included into a released set or expansion.

This play-testing allows the value of cards to be accurately determined. Once the relative value of the card in question is ironed out, the Coin cost is ascribed to it.

It could be argued that cards that cost 5 coin are the crux of the game.  They are usually markedly more important and powerful than cards costing less.  In fact, overall game strategy will often be dictated by and rotate around the presence of central 5 Coin cards on any given Dominion board.  On some boards, a 5/2 opening will virtually ensure victory over a 4/3 opening by allowing the purchase and rapid deployment of a critical card before one’s opponent has a chance to acquire it.  5 Coin cards deal out devastating attacks, greatly increase purchasing power, drive engines, trash deck-clogging junk, and usually more than one of those things at the same time!  Rightly managing this cost tier is usually how the elite Dominion players win versus the mediocre or merely recreational players.  The diversity of the cards and functions thereof make the temptation great to buy errantly or undervalue buying a Gold in favor of a more flashy Action card.

This is a list of Dominion cards that cost 5 Coin. Cards costing 5 Coin are usually central to the strategic foundation from which engines grow and games are won.  Be sure identify which cards are central to your strategy and are critical to obtain before making your first purchase. Have a plan for getting those pivotal cards before making your first move.

The Dominion cards that cost 5 Coin are listed below in table form. The table is sortable by clicking the header of each column, should you wish to sort it further.

List of Dominion Cards that Cost 5 Coin: Conclusion

The 5 Coin cards often win games by providing an insurmountable advantage to the first person to gain them or to the player that utilizes them most effectively in relation to the rest of the board.  As always, setting the strategy at the beginning is critical. Failing to pay attention to cards such as Mountebank or Witch can spell certain defeat.  Ignoring the pure card-drawing power of Wharf can do likewise.  There are more cards at this price point than any other, and this diversity drives the game.  The 5 Coin attacks are brutal, the Action-granting and card-drawing 5 Coin cards ramp up everything, and the duration cards like Tactician truly open up the possibilities and interactions within each game.  For this price point, it is hard to buy too many or too soon.  Just don’t forget about Gold!

While 5 Coin cards are usually central to a successful plan, don’t be reticent to trash or upgrade them as your strategy comes to life or if they’ve served their purpose (like when all the Curses are gone and Witch is clogging your deck toward the endgame). Particularly in longer Colony games, trashing the once-necessary 5 Coin can be vital to securing a win. Don’t forget also that they can sometimes be critical late game purchases in specific cases or to end the game by three-piling.  Buy them when they fit your strategy!

So, keep playing and having fun! If you have a comment or a bit of knowledge to share, be sure to leave a comment below.

Thanks for posting these lists with the ability to change the sort by column. Invaluable! I did notice an error in the 5 Coin List; there a two Harvests. The second should be Highway.

A bit of advice for the new players – Chapel is (arguably) the most powerful card in the game, let alone 2 Coins cards. It will allow trashing four cards on your third or fourth turn to allow buying of money cards to further use Chapel to trash the rest of the coppers and Estates. It will turbo-charge the deck. Including a secondary trash like Steward(3) or Bishop(4) is sometimes a good idea to get rid of Chapel when no longer needed (engine). It also allows the trashing of curses which can bog down a deck.

***** You can use Chapel to trash into a five card combo hand like (Bishop, Fortress, Fortress, Poor House, Poor House) in seven-eight turns or add a Grand Market in one more turn if Colonies are in play. *****

The best 3 Coin card is (arguably) Steward. Others may argue the Fishing Village is better (and it is an awesome card) but the Steward offers far more flexibility than a Fishing Village. If there are no Chapels but there are Stewards AND MONEY ACTIONS, buy the Steward within the first two hands.

The best 4 Coin “Village” is (arguably) the Wandering Minstrel as it allows dumping the junk into the discard pile, stacking the deck and giving +2 Actions. Awesome.

    Good Luck players!
