List of Dominion Cards that Cost 4 Coin

list of dominion cards that cost 4 coinDominion is a very well-designed game. Each facet of the game contributes to the overall whole, from the artwork on the cards to the themes within each set all the way down to the cost of each card. Nothing is arbitrary or random, and every card undergoes extensive testing and trial play prior to being included into a released set or expansion.

This play-testing allows the value of cards to be accurately determined. Once the relative value of the card in question is ironed out, the Coin cost is ascribed to it. Cards that cost 4 Coin are especially worthy of consideration at the beginning of every game. As the probability of opening with 4/3 Coin in the first two hands is significantly greater than opening 5/2, most games will see multiple purchases of a 4 Coin card in the first two rounds before the first re-shuffle as each player is likely to grab one. The strategic ramifications are legion when it comes to the first purchases, so no 4 Coin card (or any other card, for that matter), should be purchased without understanding your plan for its effective tactical deployment. Typically, buying a 4 Coin card will serve to jump-start your planned engine, increase purchasing power to facilitate obtaining the higher-powered cards in the 5 Coin tier, or deal out debilitating attacks to your opponents.

The 4 Coin Kingdom Cards are priced higher than Silver for a reason.  They are typically more powerful, with many giving the 2 Coin that silver delivers but with additional functions as well.  Consequently, 4 Coin cards are usually a better buy than Silver unless you are at risk of colliding terminal actions or drawing terminal actions dead (drawing a terminal action without any actions left to play the drawn action).

This is a list of Dominion cards that cost 4 Coin. Cards costing 4 Coin are usually one half of the strategic foundation from which engines grow and games are won. Be sure identify which cards are central to your strategy and are critical before making your first purchase. Have a plan for getting those pivotal cards before making your first move. The cards from Dominion Alchemy are notable because, while they cost 4 Coin, they also include the alternative Potion cost (which costs 4 Coin to buy itself). The cards with Potion in their cost can and do typically benefit more than the others.

The Dominion cards that cost 4 Coin are listed below in table form. The table is sortable by clicking the header of each column, should you wish to sort it further.

List of Dominion Cards that Cost 4 Coin: Conclusion

The 4 Coin cards often win games by setting the strategy at the beginning. Failing to pay attention to cards such as Sea Hag can spell certain defeat. Buying too many terminal actions at 4 Coin can do the same.  There are plenty of cards at this price point like Caravan that can rarely hurt you. But, there are rarely-used situational cards like Coppersmith as well.  And, everyone loves the Villages (Worker’s, Farming, Walled, e.g.) for engine generation.  Just don’t buy them too soon.

While 4 Coin cards are usually part of the foundation of a successful plan, don’t be reticent to trash or upgrade them as your strategy comes to life or if they’ve served their purpose (like when all the Curses are gone with Sea Hag clogging your deck). Particularly in longer Colony games, trashing the once-valuable 4 Coin cards is vital to take the win. And, they can sometimes be critical late game purchases in specific cases or to end the game by three-piling. Buy them when they fit your strategy!

So, keep playing and having fun! If you have a comment or a bit of knowledge to share, be sure to leave a comment below.

The best 4 Coin “Village” is (arguably) the Wandering Minstrel as it allows dumping the junk into the discard pile, stacking the deck and giving +2 Actions. Awesome.
